From July 10 to 17, a few hundred scientists from around the world will gather in Ghent to attend the European Physical Society Conference on High Energy Physics. This international conference is organized every two years, each time at a different location in Europe, and reviews the latest developments in Particle Physics and related fields. On the occassion of the 2019 edition of this conference in Ghent, a number of public events are scheduled, including our Cool Physics Day, a science movie evening and our science-and-art project. Welcome to the fascinating world of physics !

Our main Cool Physics Day event will teach you the basics of Particle Physics in a science exhibition, will amaze you in a spectacular physics show and will link you up to some of today's most advanced experiments during our virtual visits. Think quarks, Higgs bosons, CERN, Large Hadron Collider, gravitational waves and so much more !

Find out more details on this event below, and follow visit our Cool Physics Day Facebook event page for the latest updates.

Physics Exhibition
Dive with us during one afternoon into the fascinating world of particle physics, CERN, the Large Hadron Collider and much more ! This exhibition will introduce you to the sensational phenomena that govern our Universe. Learn about the intriguing mysteries that still puzzle particle physicists today, and see the latest technologies used to uncover them. Ask your favorite questions to our exhibition guides. With plenty of images, animations and hands-on setups this exhibition is open to everyone.
Physics on Stage
Physics is boring you think ? So not true ! Join us in this one hour show, in which physicists will perform a spectacular series of demonstrations on stage using mainly everyday tools and materials. As they say ... don't try this at home !
Virtual Visits
Here is your chance to pay a virtual visit to some of the currently ongoing leading experiments in the field. Through a live internet connection you will be able to follow and ask questions to scientists that will give you a guided tour of their experiment.

Visits are foreseen to:
  • The CMS experiment at the world-famous Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, where the Brout-Englert-Higgs boson was discovered in 2012
  • The VIRGO experiment at the European Gravitational Observatory in Cascina, near Pisa, Italy, which is one of the sites where gravitational waves were detected for the first time in 2015
